Alberto Alonso created “Carmen” in 1967 for Prima Ballerina Maya Plisetskaya of Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre.
In this documentary celebrating the 40th anniversary of the ballet Alberto Alonso reminisces about the making of the ballet; Rodion Shchedrin, the composer and husband of Plisetskaya, talks about his take on Bizet's famous opera and we see the role of Carmen performed by Alicia Alonso, Alessandra Ferri, and others.
Maestro Alonso traveled to Moscow again in 2006 to restage “Carmen” for the weeklong celebration of Maya Plisetskaya's life and career. The role of Carmen was danced by Svetlana Zacharova, one of the most acclaimed Russian ballerinas today.
The film premiered at the Walter Reade Theatre, Lincoln Center Plaza, NY in January 2007.
Cuban born choreographer Alberto Alonso made USA his home in 1993, worked around the world well into his 80s and passed away in Florida on Dec 31, 2007 at the age of 90.
